Long weekends in Canada

When is the next long weekend in Canada? This page lists the dates for 2025 long weekends in Ontario, BC, Alberta and other provinces and territories.

There are at least 7 long weekends in 2025 in Canada - but this depends on where you live and what day holidays fall on that aren't normally on Mondays.

When holidays that are fixed to certain dates are on Fridays or Mondays, instead of always being on Mondays, then those holidays also turn into long weekends.

Family Day long weekend

The Family Day long weekend in 2025 is February 15-17. Family Day is on Monday every year to guarantee us a long weekend in February.

Easter long weekend

Easter is always a long weekend by default becuase Easter is a multi-day holiday starting on Good Friday and ending on Easter Monday. In 2025 the Easter long weekend is from April 18 - April 21. Good Friday is a nationwide statutory holiday while Easter Monday is commonly not a holiday for private sector employees.

Canada Day long weekend

Is Canada Day a long weekend in 2025? The answer is no, because Canada day in 2025 is on a Tuesday. But you can turn the July long weekend, also known as the Canada Day long weekend, into a four day weekend simply by taking Monday off work and enjoy some down time from Saturday to Tuesday.

Victoria Day or May Two-Four long weekend

The Victoria Day long weekend is always near the end of May on the weekend preceding May 25. In 2025 it is from May 17-19 to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24, 1819. This long weekend is commonly referred to as the May Two-Four long weekend, which refers to the Canadian slag "two-four", meaning a case of 24 beers. It is the unofficial start of summer for many Canadians.

The August long weekend

The 2025 August long weekend is August 2-4 for the Civic Holiday. The Civic Holiday is on Monday, August 4 in 2025. It's a public holiday - not a statutory holiday - in some provinces but not across the entire country.

Labour Day long weekend

The Labour Day long weekend, which is commonly referred to as the 2025 September long weekend is from August 30 to September 1, with Labour Day being on Monday. This is generally the last day of summer break before classes resume on the following day.

Thanksgiving long weekend

The October long weekend in 2025 is the long weekend ending on Monday, October 13 for thanksgiving.

Other holidays

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is not a long weekend every year because observance is fixed on September 30. In 2025 it's on a Tuesday.

Christmas and Boxing Day don't always turn into long weekends automatically either, however, in 2025 they are on Thursday and Friday to create an automatic four-day weekend for the holidays. Check the page about Christmas on the weekend to read about what happens when Christmas is not on a weekday.

It would be great if we could just all agree to have the first Monday off every month, end of discussion. Predictable and provides a day off at regular intervals.

Happy workers are productive workers. A single day holiday once a month yields happy workers.

Re @Johnny "Our production as a country is already deficient" - IMO it's not because there are too many holidays but because Canada is an extremely bureaucratic country and progress is slow due to the insane amount of red tape. Way too much admin/assistant staff at every level and not enough professional staff.

There should not be a long weekend every month. Our production as a country is already deficient. Compare it at least to the USA, and you will see it immediately. This is because businesses do not make enough money and, in turn, cannot invest in infrastructure, like modern machinery. I agree with having standardized holidays, especially since Banks and the Government are getting vacations on the taxpayer's dime while the taxpayers are at work. It's unfair to those who work hard. No free handouts!

Posted by Bob:

Isn't it long past time that statutory days are standardised across the whole of Canada. Every year confusion reigns. Is it a stat day in our province? Is it everyone or just government? Come on guys, get your act together!

Canada needs at least 1 long weekend for each month of the year. That means one in March, August and November. Let's make it happen!!!

Italy gets 7 weeks paid vacay, they are also one of the most productive countries above America and Canada...

Nice website! I think if Canada Day falls on a weekend, it's only extended to the Monday.

Is easter a 4 day long weekend or a 3 day long weekend?

Am I the only one who refers to every holiday as a long weekend? :-)
